European finalists Berlin style

Head of Product, Stephen Budd, led the team representing Clear Returns at the European finals of IBM SmartCamp, competing head to head with the young technology companies who were all national winners in their own right.  Two intensive days of mentoring, pitching and product development focus meant that even though we didn’t win a place at the world finals, the company, our technology and our customers all received an incredible boost from the expertise we were exposed to.

IBM select Clear Returns as SmartCamp winners

Clear Returns, a start-up from Glasgow, Scotland, has won IBM’s SmartCamp Kickstart Dublin competition. The company will now head to IBM’s European Kickstart final event in Berlin, Germany, to compete against other SmartCamp winners from around Europe for a place in the global finals in New York.

As IBM explain, past participants in SmartCamp have captured the attention of the global venture capital community and gone on to rapidly expand and drive innovation in their industry.
“Startups face tremendous challenges in a global market, especially as they compete against much large companies going after data analytics opportunities,” said Noel Crawford, Manager, Innovation Centre and Developer Relations, IBM Ireland. “IBM can help convert these companies from ‘startups to speedups’, supporting them getting to global markets faster by providing coaching and connections to IBM clients and partners.”

Big Data Venture Challenge Winners

Glasgow tech startup, Clear Returns, has beaten off competition from China, the US, Israel, Finland and the UK to win the Big Data Venture Challenge. Clear Returns won both the audience choice award for best pitch and the overall award, sponsored by media measurement giant Nielsen.

The final of the competition for young data driven technology companies took place in Rome this week, at I-COM, the International Conference on Online Media Measurement. CEO, Vicky Brock, was one of eight finalists presenting to a panel of investors and leading data experts from around the world.
“At less than 6 months old, Clear Returns was the youngest of the companies presenting in Rome. And there were some seriously big data firms in the mix. But our solution, and its clever use of data to make a real business impact for retailers, really captured the imagination of the audience and judges. It is an amazing honour to win against such smart competition.”
